CURE YOUR ITCHY BEARD IN 4 EASY STEPS

scratching itchy beard

First of all if you have decided to grow a beard congratulations you’re in the right place, I have chosen this itchy beard topic as one of my first posts simply because it is the number one reason why guys don’t grow a beard, it’s not the growing part that makes people give up it’s that annoying itchy feeling that sometimes can be so irritating that you can’t resist to shave.

Believe me I’ve been there myself and to be honest it is one of the reasons that made me blog about beards other than my love to the bearded looks, I have been suffering from itchy beard for years, I have been fortunate with the genetics I am a bit hairy so I grew my beard early when my friends in school still had no facial hair, but the itchy beard problem had made me shave it, sadly I have chosen the easy way.

If you have a healthy skin and eating well the scratchy, itchy sensation, goes away after 2 or 3 weeks.

As for any health condition you need to know why you are suffering from itchy beard sensations that can be very irritating and annoying, well here is why:

To explain things with easy terms your beard is kind of like a tree that has roots and needs water to survive just that your beard survives on oil that it absorbs directly from your skin, by drawing these oils from your skin, your face becomes dry and irritated. That’s when the itching starts. Your face’s skin gets drier and drier and eventually may begin flaking off leaving you with the dreaded “beardruff”.

If not treated your face gets drier and drier, and your beard has no more oils to absorb so the hair becomes dried too and the itchy feeling gets stronger to the point of “sorry baby had to shave it”, so if you want to avoid a sexless week till your beard grows back here are some efficient tips that I tested personally to get over the itchy feeling.

1- Preventive moisturizing

using oil to moisturize itchy beard

Most people on the internet go with the clean it as the first remedy to this beard issue, and you’ll get over the itchy feeling after a couple of weeks based on  the fact that the itchy feeling is the sharp hair growing and irritating your skin then after a week or so it becomes curly and touches your face back with its sharp end and after that the itchy feeling goes away, it is partly true but mostly the itchy beard is caused by dry skin as we explained earlier so cleaning your beard is not going to moisturize it nor get your skin oils back it’s quite the opposite the more you wash your beard the drier it becomes.

Washing is necessary though just not too much and we’ll get back to it.
So your first approach would be preventive moisturizing, most people don’t deal with the problem unless they’re deep down in it, take action before you get to the point of considering shaving your beard, you know you are going to lose skin oils that’s a fact why wait till your skin gets dry then use oils, most guys don’t even consider using any product for the first week, wrong you need to get your skin moisturized before it gets to a point where it becomes hard to cure.

2 - Cleaning the beard

Cleaning the beard to avoid itchy feeling

The first question when it comes to cleaning your beard is how often and what do I use to do so, well you know your own skin better than anyone, it’s kind of like your hair it depends on the time (summer or winter) and what you are doing, being in the field is not the same as being in an office just like your hair once a day perhaps every 3 days, depends on your environment, over cleaning can have damaging consequences on your skin as it dries the skin the more you clean it the more skin oils you lose and we’ve explained earlier why skin oils are essential to a healthy beard, note that if you are in an extreme environment and get dirty most the time you can and should clean up your beard but you have to go heavy with the use of oils on your beard.

The second important thing about cleaning your beard is how, not that obvious as you’d think, actually the water temperature is the key, you want the water to be warm not too hot nor too cold, here is why; the hot water burns makes the pores of your skin open up and you lose more oils and your skin becomes more fragile and when scratched it just becomes unbearable, too cold water won’t clean up with efficiently and may make your face skin hard and thick, warm water will wash away any dirt and won’t hurt your skin.

The last thing you would consider for washing your beard is a shampoo it is preferred to use beard shampoo on it (I know too many products to use but listen if you want to grow a beard it’s like anything else it needs care so you better make a little beard money aside for that purpose mostly products don’t cost a lot, I will be reviewing some good products that I will be recommending some I use myself and some I still testing) when applying the shampoo don’t go too hard on your skin and remember shampoo is for cleaning oil for moisturizing so shampoo should not be applied with force to the skin it’s for the beard hair so like your hair try to dig in with your fingers and wash it no brush is needed yet keep washing it with warm water to make sure all the shampoo is gone then dry it, this is important you need all the water out and your skin to be dry (with no water on it not dry as in dry itchy skin) this part is important for the next step.

3 - More moisturizing

moisturizing the beard to stop itchy sensations

Now you need to keep applying oil to your beard (I personally use argan based oils it is great since I got access to pure argan oil it does help but not everyone can put his hands on argan oil but still there are plenty of good oils as I mentioned earlier I will make some reviews and recommendations) as your beard grow it absorbs more skin oils so you have to replace that oil and let’s not forget that washing with water takes out the oils too so don’t forget to use a few drops on your palm then use your fingers to go deep and moisturize  the skin every day.

Once your beard gets after the month to 2 months long and you keep taking care of it you are fine keep what’s you’re doing, if it gets itchy again and your skin starts to dry then you’ll have to trim your beard and start over you don’t want to have a long beard with itchy skin make a healthy skin before growing it.

4 - Conditioning

using beard conditioner for itchy beard

Well if you are at the conditioning phase it means that you have made it to a healthy beard now conditioner for you beard is only when your beard is a bit long so it doesn’t get curly and dry and gives it a softer feels that will keep it from going back to hit your skin making it itchy it also gives a good looks and texture to your beard, the shiny soft looks you want, you can use it every day or couple days, (there are many good conditioners in the market  I’ll make sure to recommend some good products to use later on)

Please note that a brush is not needed for the first few weeks of growing your beard it can make the itchy sensations worst or even damage your skin.

This is all you need to get over the itchy beard issue that kept you from growing your beard and getting the manly looks you deserve, make sure to try it and remember your beard is alive so take care of it and if you still get the itchy feeling try to change products you use trim it and start over but don’t give up on it I know the feeling I had my fair share of itchy beard but I managed to get over it and grow a nice beard I’m proud of just following those tips I just shared with you if you still have any questions about it or want to share some more tips you can use the comment section or contact page I am available for advice.

One last tip if you do have access to argan oil it is the best oil you can use for skin care don’t hesitate to use it but make sure it is pure argan oil since most of the argan products on the market do not have any argan in them or in some cases a very small percentage.
